Duffy

Access: The Duffy refers to a stretch of road on HWY 99, Northeast of Pemberton.  Common ski objectives lie on both sides of the highway and there are a handful of huts that are both walk-up and reservable.

Route Description:

Keith's Hut vacinity:  Keith's Hut is a walk-up hut that can be stayed at through-out the winter. It gets crowded on most weekends. If planning to stay its often a safe measure to bring a tent as  back-up or get there early. The hut is accessed by Cerise Creek, but much of the terrain around Matier Glacier can be reached by Cerise Creek or Joffre Lakes.  Common big objectives that can be either done as a day or from the hut are Vantage,Matier, Slokam, Joffre and Mt. Howard. Each of these peaks has technical ascents and descent with glacier travel and steep exposed travel.   Closer tours include the Anniversary glacier and the flanks of Vantage while a further objective might include snow spire.  There is some tree skiing, but the best terrain is in the alpine.

Matier:

Matier has a few routes but the classic is the NW Face.  Getting to the NW face involved skiining up the anniversary glacier from Keiths hut, or skinning across the Matier glacier from the Joffre Lakes.  Climb Matier just east of the North ridge, while being careful of the Bergschrund located just above the last col. Traverse the summit and descent the south ridge 'til you get to the obvious saddle atop the NW face. The face rolls at top but then continues at a consistent 45 degrees or so for the full 2000'. It also tends to hold powder really well.  Across from Matier is the 2000' Aussie Coulior on Joffre.
